Got a car you want to keep running for a long time? Then a healthy cooling system is a must. Learn how to perform a radiator flush in five simple steps.
Vehicles need regular maintenance to keep working. While many of these maintenance tasks are small and simple, they can lead to big, expensive repairs if left undone for too long.
Flushing your car radiator is one of those regular maintenance tasks that every vehicle needs to keep working. The radiator is the heart of your vehicle’s cooling system, sending liquid coolant (coolant) to various parts of the engine to keep it from overheating. Fortunately, it’s an easy project you can do yourself.
Directions for Usage
- Locate the Radiator
- Open the hood and find the radiator (finned metal near the front).
- Identify the radiator cap (often labeled “radiator coolant”).
- Drain the Radiator
- Go underneath and find the drain valve or lower hose with a clamp.
- Place a drain pan underneath, then open valve or loosen clamp.
- Let coolant drain completely (at least 10 minutes).
- Flush the Radiator
- Close valve or reattach hose securely.
- Fill radiator with distilled water, replace cap, run engine for 10–15 minutes.
- Turn off engine, drain radiator again.
- Properly dispose of old coolant—never leave it where kids or pets can access it.
- Add Fresh Coolant
- Check manual for required coolant volume.
- Fill radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water (or use premixed).
- Fill overflow tank to the service line.
- Start engine, let it run a few minutes, and check for leaks.
- Top Off Coolant
- Turn off engine.
- Add more coolant/water until visible in overflow tank.
- Top off overflow tank to just below service line.
- Job complete!
